Simple Respirometer
Product Code : SCL-BLE-12667
Simple Respirometer for comparing the rates of absorption or evolution
of gases by small organisms, during respiration. The apparatus consists of two
stoppered boiling tubes connected by three-way taps to either limb of a
graduated manometer.
One tube holds the organisms and has a syringe connector for altering the
level of liquid in the manometer during setting up.
The other tube acts as a control thermo barometer. The Carbon Dioxide
given off by the respiring organisms is absorbed by Potassium Hydroxide in the
experimental chamber resulting in a change in the level of liquid in the
manometer tube.
- Complete
with wire baskets for supporting organisms.
- Capillary
Tube Diameter - 0.8mm (approx.)
Reasons to Love
- Easy
to use and set up.
- The
wire baskets support and protect the organisms being studied.
Learning Outcomes
- Evolution
of carbon dioxide by organisms or fermenting yeast,
- Evolution
of oxygen during photosynthesis (if used with Algae)
Top Tips
- Suitable
living organisms include Woodlice, Locusts, Maggots (Yeast can also be
used)
- Potassium
Hydroxide can be purchased separately.
