A medical student is training to become an emergency physician. They are using a vaginal culdocentesis training model to practice performing the procedure on a patient with a suspected ruptured ectopic pregnancy. The model is positioned in a lithotomy position, and the student is using their hands to palpate the fornices. Once they have identified the posterior fornix, they insert a needle into the pouch of Douglas and aspirate fluid. The student then examines the fluid to see if it is bloody, which would be a sign of ruptured ectopic pregnancy.
